The first buyer of your Smart Roadster neglected to tick the “cruise control” box?
Never mind. You just have to buy the cruise/wiper stalk, hammer it in in place of your existing wiper only one and assuming that your car has been prewired for it (most were) you plug in the previously unused plug and off you go.
EDIT: There you don’t go, because you have to get the ECU reprogrammed by a dealer.
No extra hardware needed (unless you’ve drawn the short straw and haven’t got the wiring in which case you buy or make the extra harness).
As to why anybody would want cruise on a car singularly ill suited for long distance travel on a motorway is another matter.

I realize that we have some big time Smart fans on Oppo. I am not one of them.

Fun fact: Pretty much all early cruise controls for the 451 fortwos came from the previous generation 450. Apparently when the 451 was released, smart also thought “why would anyone want cruise control?” and thus it wasn’t an option until smart owners around the world were begging for the feature. As it turns out, a lot of people actually drive them on the motorway. lol

How very ... German?
I believe my car has a number of unused wiring connectors/harnesses that aren’t used in any version of my car that was sold in my market, but I also know it lacks at least one I really wish it had (which would allow me to easily install an auto-dimming mirror or a dash cam without a lot of work)...

A lot of modern cars are like that. There’s no point in spending the money to create a separate wiring loom for cars without X option, so automakers just put the same one in every car. The wiring is there, the software is there, all you have to do is plug in the missing components.

I had an ex, and her car didn’t have cruise control. We always took my car. Once we took a long trip in it, and I hated it. I still do to this day. If I see the same make and model I cringe.

I’m guessing you’ve never seen either of the Roadsters! What do you have against them?

I’d never seen those. I guess they’re just not manly enough for me. Seriously though, they do not seem practical to me nor look comfortable to ride in. I rented a Fiat 500 once and didn’t like it and have assumed the Smart would be more so. Or less so...
